Be filled with the Holy Spirit
-The threefold statement of a verb-
What or who can take the Church to be an agent of miracles? What is necessary for the Church to be a faithful witness of the power of the Word of God and the resurrection of Jesus Christ? What can keep the Church motivated when problems and threats surround it?
At the end of Acts chapter 5 we see the faces of the apostles full of joy after going through an arrest, being questioned by the high priest, and flogged. For most of us that kind of day could be a day finished with a lot of complaints, but for those men filled with the Holy Spirit it was a joyful day.
The apostle Paul, knowing how hard our day could be sometimes, shares with us a letter written to the Ephesians:
“Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit” Ephesians 5:18
First, Paul advises us of what not to be filled. If there is emptiness in your heart, don’t satisfy your soul or body with things that will lead your life to excesses and will leave you worst later.
Second, Paul advises us of what we should be filled. Here is where the threefold statement of a verb makes an awesome sense:
1. “Be filled” is a transitive verb, which means, that we are not filled with the Spirit by ourselves. Rather, we are the object of the action of the infilling of the Spirit. It is not the spirit of our own goodness our righteousness what gives us power to live a victorious life, it is His Spirit, His own presence in us.
2. “Be filled” is an imperative verb, which means, we have to be filled with the Spirit. That is a direct command. It is not an option for the Church. It is not a choice for the People of God. We need to, we have to, we ought to, be filled with the Holy Spirit in order to be agents of a greater mission and purpose than ourselves.
3. “Be filled” is a present verb. In this case, the verb indicates a continuous kind of action more than a time. In other words, the apostle Paul is commanding us to be filled with the Holy Spirit and to continue being filled with His presence. Whenever your spiritual tank is running on empty you need to be filled with His Spirit. Whenever joy, peace, love, and passion are growing dry into your heart, you need to be filled with the Holy Spirit.
You need to be filled with the Holy Spirit!!! I need to be filled with the Holy Spirit!!! We need to be filled with the Holy Spirit!!!
Be honest and acknowledge if your spiritual tank is running almost empty. Be humble. Surrender all. Ask your Father in heaven to fill you up with His amazing presence.
Be filled with the Holy Spirit!!!
